Chaffin holds off Pointers

After Chaffin utilized a pair of onside kicks and recovered an early Pointer turnover, the Cougars built a 21-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game.

But that was all Chaffin could do and hold Van Buren’s offense as the Cougars were able to escape Jim Rowland Stadium 21-14 on Thursday in a River Valley Conference contest.

The loss dropped VBFA to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Pointers host Ramsey next week before squaring off against Alma (Oct. 19), Greenwood (Oct. 26) and Harrison (Nov. 2).

The Pointers got on board after they took over on the Cougar 21 with 44 seconds remaining in the first half.

Gary Phillips hit Hayden Roark for a 12-yard strike and added the two-point conversion to make it 21-7 at the break.

The Pointers were able to stop Chaffin to start the second half on a fourth and 14 after a seven-yard sack by Doug Giron.

Xavier McCormick capped a 12-play drive on a one-yard run and the Pointers were within a touchdown with 0:51.5 remaining in the third quarter.

Phillips finished with 15 carries for 37 yards and was 7 of 14 for 90 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
